What Makes Calumet Hockeyville USA? It’s Not The Rink, But The People

The chants of “Calumet!” have barely settled down as the community begins preparations for the upgrades at the Colosseum and looking forward to hosting the NHL preseason game in the fall.

Forward Michael Babcock of the Calumet Wolverines says Kraft’s recognition as Hockeyville USA is a big boost for the entire area.

“We all could use some good news especially because we all persevered through all of these things and as a community, we came together and supported each other the best we could, and then to suddenly get this amazing news like this that this money is going to come in and we’re going to get this event,” said Babcock. “Just Friday when we were talking I described how amazing it would be to see these NHL players come into our community and take a step on our ice like this and that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”

Though the award comes from Kraft, Babcock points out that this title was not a gift but earned by the people who voiced their support for the Colosseum.

“We have a lot to be proud of because it wasn’t just something that was given to us.  It wasn’t just ‘oh yeah, they won because they have the coolest or oldest rink’ or something like that.  These other communities got behind it in just as strong of ways as we did.  It was really cool to see that effort and we should feel more proud because of that,” said Babcock.
