Grant Approved To Renovate Copper Range Depot

The city of Houghton will receive over $600,000 in grant money for architectural and engineering work for the Copper Range Depot.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a number of projects across Michigan that will spark economic development.

“Like many U.P. communities, we have historic landmarks left standing from the mining and logging boom,” State Representative Greg Markkanen said. “I am excited to see another one of these landmarks restored and put to use in our community. I am pleased to see grant money being used to increase economic development.”

The money will be used to restore the character and historical appearance of the Copper Range Depot.

The project will increase square footage and bring in a projected $900,000 private investment.

When completed, a restaurant is expected to open and should generate over 20 new jobs.
