Former Family Dollar Store Roof Collapses

The roof of the former Family Dollar store on 5th Street in downtown Calumet partially collapsed this week under the weight of snow.

The collapse began sometime Wednesday night into Thursday morning and forced the closure of a block of 5th Street, which was littered with debris.

Family Dollar still owns the building which has remained vacant since the store relocated to Elm Street.

Calumet Floral & Gifts, located next door to the vacant store, was forced to evacuate their location and is currently operating offsite.

Flower shop co-owner Amy Knight said their building was not damaged and they are waiting to hear word that they can return to their store.

While 5th Street remains closed, Knight said they are looking into the possibility of using their side door, which opens onto Oak Street.

Knight says she hopes they will get an update on when they can reopen their store soon, hopefully by the end of the day.

In the meantime, she says they are continuing to operate and customers can contact them at 337-1711.
