Houghton Hockey Advances to State Semis – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton hockey team scored three times in the third period, and advanced to the state Division Three semifinals with a 4-1 victory over Alpena last night. Justin Norkol scored the first and last goals for the Gremlins, with tallies by Jett Heinonen and Seth Francois sandwiched in between. The Huskies will face Riverview Gabriel Richard in the first semifinal tomorrow morning at 11:00 in Plymouth. Our coverage will begin at 10:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Detroit Country Day will meet East Grand Rapids in the other semifinal.

In girls District hoops semifinals last night…

In Division Four District 98, Chassell eliminated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 65-19. Jenna Pietila led the Panthers with 14 points. Baraga ousted Hancock 42-32. Reide Osterman and Rylie Koskinen each scored 10 for the Vikings. The Panthers and Vikings will pay for the District title tomorrow at 7:00 at Chassell.

In Division Four, District 97 at Bessemer, Jeffers downed Wakefield-Marenisco 57-25. Marissa Nordstrom scored 16 for the Jets. Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Ontonagon 41-20. The Jets and Panthers will play for the District title tomorrow at 7:00 Eastern Time at Bessemer.

In Division Three, Ava Anderson scored 21, as Calumet eliminated Ironwood 72-49. The Copper Kings will host West Iron County in the District championship game tomorrow. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a 61-42 loss to Gladstone. The Gremlins led by a point at halftime, but faded in the second half. Cassie Ryynanen led Houghton with 13 points.

In the boys Division Four Regional basketball final tonight, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will meet Forest Park at 7:00 at Negaunee.

MTU

The Michigan Tech football team has released its 2019 schedule. The Huskies will open with three straight road games, beginning September 7th at Hillsdale College. They will have only four home games, including an October 12th contest against Northern Michigan University. See the full schedule here.

The Detroit Pistons used a strong finish to put away the Minnesota Timberwolves 131-114 last night. Detroit’s reserves contributed 70 points. Andre Drummond led the Pistons with 31 points and 15 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night. Pregame coverage starts at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Tigers dropped an 8-2 Grapefruit League game to the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Tyson Ross gave up four runs over three innings. JaCoby Jones hit a home run. The Tigers face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 yesterday. Jhoulys Chacín allowed a run over three innings. Eric Thames and Erik Kratz homered. The Brewers will play the Chicago White Sox this afternoon.
