Whitmer To Unveil Road Funding Plan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she has a plan to “fix the damn roads” by raising the fuel tax by 45 cents per gallon.

The Detroit Free Press reports the proposal is part of her budget being presented to a joint session of the Michigan House and Senate today in Lansing.

The tax would be phased in over a one year period and would generate more that $2 million for road repair.

The first 15 cent hike would take effect on October 1st with additional increases in April and October of 2020.

Motorists could expect an average increase of $6.75 for a 15-gallon fill-up.

The Republican-controlled legislature passed a road funding bill under the Snyder administration but critics say it falls short of raising the necessary funds.

That bill included a gas tax hike of just over 7 cents a gallon and Republicans are not expected to support Whitmer’s proposal for the additional increase.
