LSPR Opens Today – Friday Sports Wrap

In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet defeated L’Anse 3-1.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Ontonagon 3-2.
– Chassell shut out Dollar Bay 3-0.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Watersmeet 3-0.

Tomorrow, Houghton, Calumet, Hancock, L’Anse, Baraga, and Chassell will be among the teams playing at the Houghton Invitational.

In high school football tonight…
Calumet Copper Kings Logo– Calumet plays at Ironwood. Our pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The Copper Kings need to win their final two games to lock up a playoff spot.
– Hancock entertains West Iron County.
– L’Anse hosts Northland Pines. The Purple Hornets need to win their final two games to reach the playoffs.
– Houghton plays at Baraga. It will be the last 11-man game for the Vikings, who have next week off, and move to the eight-man division next season.

Lake Linden-Hubbell LogoTomorrow…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Dickinson for Parents Day. Our pregame coverage begins at 1:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In eight-man action, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon. It will be the first time since Ewen moved to the eight-man division at the end of the 2010 season that the Panthers will play a local opponent.

In high school cross country, the Upper Peninsula Championship will be run tomorrow at the Gentz Homestead Golf Course in Harvey. You can link to video coverage of the meet here.

MTU Football Hosts GVSU
MTU Huskies LogoThe unbeaten Michigan Tech football team hosts Grand Valley State tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

The Huskies’ soccer team hosts Findlay tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 at Sherman Field. Tech will entertain Tiffin Sunday at noon.

The Tech volleyball team will play at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover at Aurora, Illinois this weekend. The Huskies open this afternoon against Missouri S&T… then face Lewis tomorrow morning, and Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow afternoon.

The Huskies women’s tennis team plays at Lake Superior State tomorrow morning.

NMU Athletics LogoNMU Football Hosts Wayne State
The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Wayne State tomorrow. The Wildcats are still looking for their first victory of the season.

The Wildcats’ hockey team opens its season against Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow night. Both games will be played at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Finlandia
Finlandia LionsThe Finlandia volleyball team visits Mount Mary University for a triangular today. The Lions will face the host team this afternoon, and North Central University tonight. The Lions then head to Chicago, for a triangular at Illinois Tech tomorrow afternoon. They’ll play the host team, and Moody Bible Institute.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team entertains Wisconsin-Whitewater Sunday. The game begins at 1:00 at McAfee Field.

NHL – Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Toronto tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Patriots blocked a 58-yard field goal attempt as time expired, and pulled out a 27-25 victory over the Jets.

Detroit Lions LionThe Lions host the Saints Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. Detroit is searching for some help at tight end. Eric Ebron may not be available Sunday because of a hamstring injury. That leaves Brandon Pettigrew as the only healthy tight end on the roster. Former MSU tight end Kellen Davis was among those who worked out for the team this week.

The Packers entertain the Panthers. That’s also a 1:00 start time.

NBA – Pistons
The Detroit Pistons’ next preseason game will be this evening at Orlando. We will carry select Pistons games again this season on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Race LogoKeweenaw Cup Cyclocross Opens Tomorrow
The Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Races will be held this weekend. The Downtown Hoedown will take place tomorrow in Copper Harbor. The Top of the World Smackdown will be held Sunday at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Races are open to everyone, and prizes will be awarded in five divisions. LSPR Opens Today
LSPR Lake Superior Performance Rally 2014 LogoThe Lake Superior Performance Rally opens today. You can check out the cars at the parc expose beginning at 11:30 at the Country Inn and Suites. Drivers will hit the course at one-minute intervals beginning at 1:40. A second parc expose will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. The course will cover back roads in southern Houghton and Baraga Counties over the next two days. Check the full schedule and route here. Access the event program here.
