McBroom Focuses On Auto Insurance, Overworked Nurses

State Senator Ed McBroom has had a busy couple of days in Lansing this week, testifying before a Senate Committee Wednesday on auto insurance reform and sponsoring a bill Thursday to help nurses.

McBroom testified before the Senate Insurance and Banking Committee on how Michigan’s highest-in-the-nation rates are affecting residents.

Senate Bill 1 was introduced by McBroom in January and seeks to lower auto insurance costs by providing drivers more choice in what they pay for, lowering the number of people without auto insurance, and reducing fraud in the system, all while ensuring accident victims receive necessary medical care.

Senate Bill 159 is one of three bills included in the bi-partisan Safe Patient Care Act and would establish limits on patient assignments so nurses have enough time to spend with each patient.

The bill would set the maximum ratio on a medical-surgical floor at four patients per RN

The package of legislation would also curb forced overtime for registered nurses, and require hospitals to release staffing information.
