The Keweenaw County Historical Society has been awarded $33,333 for the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse from grants funded by the sale of Save Our Lights license plates.

The funds will be used to hire contractors to replace or rehabilitate 12 double-hung wood windows, rehabilitate two original wood casement windows in the tower and build and install 13 new wood storm windows.

The project will also include improvements to the interior ventilation of the lighthouse.

The other historic lighthouses to receive funding from the state include the North Manitou Shoal Light near Leland and the Grosse Ile Light, both of which are receiving $40,000.

Awardees are chosen annually through a competitive application process.  To date, the program has awarded more than $2.2 million to help rehabilitate and preserve lighthouses in Michigan.
