Houghton Boys Claim U.P. Swim Crown – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey yesterday…

  • Houghton blanked Kingsford 4-0. P.J. Donnelly had two goals and two assists. Ty Halonen and Nathan Erva also scored, and Matthew Ryynanen had to make just 12 saves to earn the shutout.
  • Calumet defeated Escanaba 5-1. Brent Loukus scored twice for the Copper Kings. Alex Mattila, Tanner Rowe and Dean Loukus also found the net. Alex Studebaker made 13 saves.

In girls basketball yesterday, Hancock defeated Ontonagon 37-23.

The Houghton High School boys swim team easily won the Upper Peninsula title yesterday, outpointing second-place Marquette 313-203. Kevin Beaghan won the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke, and the 200-yard medley relay team also finished first.

The Houghton girls swim team finished third, behind Marquette and Kingsford.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell 9-0 to top-seeded Saint Norbert College last night in the final game of their opening-round Harris Cup playoff series. The Lions end their season with a record of 8-17-2.

Both Finlandia basketball teams have the weekend off.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-1 at 19th-ranked Lake Superior State last night. The Lakers took an early two-goal lead. Jake Lucchini got one back in the second period, but LSSU put the game away with a late empty-netter. Matt Jurusik made 25 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad lost 3-0 at Bemidji State University last night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team used a strong second quarter to defeat Ferris State University 67-49 yesterday. The Huskies outscored the Bulldogs 25-8 in the second frame. Cassidy Trotter led Tech with 20 points.

The Tech men’s team lost 75-53 at Ferris State yesterday. The Huskies fell behind early, closed the gap to three points in the second half, but faded down the stretch. Dawson Bilski scored 14 for Tech.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops squads earned victories at Lake Superior State yesterday afternoon – the women 63-47, and the men 73-68.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 6-4 to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs last night.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game the West Bend Bombers last night was not reported.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Flyers 6-5 in overtime yesterday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Wings fell behind early, then scored four straight goals in the third period to force extra time. Gustav Nyquist, Tyler Bertuzzi and Thomas Vanek found the net for Detroit, and Anthony Mantha scored the final two goals of the third period. Detroit will host the Flyers tonight. Pregame coverage will start at 5:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
