Snyder, Schauer Take Part in Debate

Education, tax policy and the state’s roads were all topics touched on in last night’s only gubernatorial debate between Governor Rick Snyder and his Democratic challenger Mark Schauer. Schauer accused the governor of cutting a billion-dollars from public education.

Snyder responded by pointing out the improvement since he took office.

Schauer also charged that Snyder cut taxes for business by $1.8 billion while increasing taxes on working families, low wage earners and pensioners. But Snyder said they changed the tax code to make it fair, noting that big companies pay roughly the same amount of tax, while the tax burden on smaller companies was lessened. When asked about the state’s roads, Schauer said he’ll make sure Michigan gets their fair share from Washington and will work with the legislature to help fix the state’s roads. Snyder said he hopes to solve the roads problem in the lame duck, noting that many in the legislature weren’t willing to vote on a road funding solution during an election cycle. Last night’s debate was the only scheduled debate with the gubernatorial candidates before the general election in November.
