Many Upper Peninsula communities find ways to embrace the long winter months and fight the seasonal blues amongst its community members. The Heikinpäivä parade is this weekend in Hancock. Winter Carnival activities continue into the second week of February on the campus of Michigan Tech, and the community of L’Anse is also hosting an outdoor winter activity—one that promises the sighting of Big Foot.
Baraga County Trails in Motion is preparing for the sixth annual Snowshoeing with Sasquatch event, set to take place in February. “Snowshoeing with Sasquatch is probably one of your most unusual events in the Upper Peninsula,” said Baraga Trails In Motion volunteer Joe Bouchard.
Whether you believe in the existence of Sasquatch or not…..“Some years we have three Big Foots,” said Bouchard.
The legend lives on in L’Anse and is the subject of an upcoming fundraiser. Bouchard said, “This is a family event. Everyone is invited from ages 2 to 200 if you wish.”
Held annually by the Baraga County Trails in Motion, Snowshoeing with Sasquatch is expected to bring around 75 participants to L’Anse Township Park. “We get a nice bonfire going and some sweet rolls and hot chocolate from the Hilltop, and we find that people like to get their picture with Big Foot,” Bouchard said.
Although donations are accepted and forwarded to a local charity, the two mile hike is free to attend and participate in, but if you’re able to donate, it’s greatly appreciated. “The snow is temporary, but hunger is persistent throughout the year. We accept donations for St. Vincent de Paul in L’Anse, any non perishable food items. Help Big Foot Feed Baraga County is what we like to say,” said Bouchard.
It’s emphasized that snowshoes are not required to enjoy the event, but a pair will be up for grabs. Bouchard said, “We do have snowshoes donated—two pair of snowshoes from Indian Country Sports—so people who come have a chance at one of theses pair of shoes and two happy winners will walk away from that.”
The event is set for one month from today’s date at 5:00 pm. “February 23rd, it’s a Saturday. Just show up and you’ll see the lights of the Michigan State Police. They are watching traffic for us,” Bouchard said.
Participants are also encouraged to bring a camera or a smart phone for photo opportunities or to confirm your sighting. “Everyone is welcome—believers, skeptics, and those who don’t know. Come on out and get a picture and enjoy the great outdoors. Grab a sweet roll and a chance to win beautiful snow shoes,” said Bouchard.
