A Lowell man has been sentenced for poaching deer under Michigan’s new enhanced sentencing guidelines.
MLive reports 25-year-old Jacob Powers of Friday pleaded guilty in Montcalm County District Court to charges of taking two white-tailed deer during the closed season.
Powers was sentenced to pay $335 in fines and costs, $12,000 in restitution for payment to the state’s Fish and Game Protection Fund. He’ll also serve five days community service.
In addition, Power’s faces up to five years of hunting license revocations in Michigan and 41 other states that participate in the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact.
The case is the first to meet the new enhanced sentencing guidelines for poaching that became law in Michigan earlier in the year.
