Fatal Snowmobile Accident By Lake Gogebic

A snowmobiler is dead following an accident in Ontonagon County.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff Office says the accident happened on Lake Gogebic around 2:30am Thursday.

46-year-old Jill Swarts of Gretna, Nebraska was reportedly traveling south on the west shore of Lake Gogebic, 150 yards south of the Ontonagon County park.

Swarts was following a group of other snowmobiles when she went off into the shoreline and struck some rocks and was then ejected from the snowmobile and struck a fallen tree causing fatal injuries.

Swarts was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital by Cane’s Funeral Home.

Authorities say weather and speed were factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.

The deputy was assisted by MSP troopers from Wakefield and Iron Mountain posts and the Chief of Marinesco PD. SONCO south and Beacon of Ironwood were also on scene.
