Houghton Hockey Dominates Escanaba – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night, Houghton cruised to a 5-1 victory over Escanaba. After a scoreless first period, the Gremlins broke the game open in the second when Jiseung Choi scored two short-handed goals just 20 seconds apart. Justin Norkol and Brad Gauthier padded the lead with two goals in the closing minute of the second stanza. Gauthier scored again in the opening minute of the third period. The Eskymos’ only tally came in the closing minute of the game. Matt Ryynanen earned the win in net, as Houghton outshot Escanaba 32-9.

Jeffers entertains Ashland in hockey today at 2:00.

In boys basketball last evening…
– Hancock exploded for 23 points in the second quarter, and defeated Jeffers 57-45. Devin Raasio led the Bulldogs with 22 points. Joe Watson added 16. Christian Hocking scored 21 for the Jets.
– Ewen-Trout Creek edged Chassell 74-73.

In girls hoops last night…
– Houghton fell to Iron Mountain 54-36.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell lost at Wakefield-Marenisco 50-31.
– Ontonagon shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 64-8.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines blasted the Portage Lake Pioneers 12-1 at the Colosseum last night. Those teams face off again tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Florida Panthers this afternoon. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 1:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons couldn’t overcome a cold start, and lost the Charlotte Hornets 98-86 last night. Blake Griffin led Detroit with 23 points. Andre Drummond snared 16 rebounds, despite battling a stomach virus. The Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow afternoon.

NFL
We will broadcast another NFL doubleheader today. Washington kicks off at Tennessee at 4:30, and the Ravens visit the Chargers at 8:20. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers visit the New York Jets for a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded outfielder Domingo Santana to the Seattle Mariners. In exchange, they get outfielder Ben Gamel, and Minor League reliever Noah Zavolas. Gamel can play all three outfield positions, and bats left-handed. He hit .272 last year, with one home run, mostly against right-handed pitching. He is the younger brother of former Milwaukee prospect Mat Gamel. Zavolas just finished his first pro season, after playing college ball for Harvard.

CopperDog 150
The CopperDog 150 will offer free dogsled rides for kids at Agassiz Park in Calumet today between noon and 2:00. Refreshments will be available. Meet the dogs up close, and take pictures. CopperDog 150 merchandise will be sold. The 10th annual CopperDog 150 will be held the first weekend in March. For the first time, this year’s event will feature three races – the usual three-stage run for 10-dog teams, a two-stage run for eight-dog teams, and a single stage run for six-dog teams.
