NMU Goalie Scores as Hockey Wildcats Beat Tech – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Rochester blanked Hancock 3-0.
– Houghton and Livonia Stevenson skated to a 3-3 tie. Brad Gauthier, Jiseung Choi and Niko Rajala scored for the Gremlins, who outshot Stevenson 36-19.

In high school hockey today…
– Houghton welcomes Rochester. Our broadcast will begin at 1:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com
– Hancock entertains Livonia Stevenson.

In high school boys basketball last night… Calumet dropped a 78-71 decision to Iron Mountain in overtime. Iron Mountain’s Foster Wonders hit a jumper at the buzzer to force the extra period. The Copper Kings played the overtime without Matt and Travis Ojala and Eli McParlan, who had fouled out.

On the girls schedule last evening…
– Houghton lost to Negaunee 66-33.
– Hancock defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 59-14.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 54-28.
– Baraga smothered Bessemer 66-15.

In high school swimming today, Houghton hosts Sault Sainte Marie.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 7-0 to Wisconsin-Superior last night. The Lions were outshot 63-17. Finlandia will skate at Superior again tonight.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team, and both Lions basketball teams are off this weekend.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has introduced a new recruit. Laura Jensen comes from Romulus, in the Detroit area.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 5-3 to Northern Michigan University last night in Marquette. Greyson Reitmeyer scored twice for the Huskies. Trenton Bliss added a goal in the closing seconds. Matt Jurusik made 28 saves. The highlight of the game came with 67 seconds remaining, when NMU goalie Atte Tolvinen stopped a Tech shot, and slapped the puck the length of the ice into the Huskies’ empty net. It’s only the second time in WCHA men’s history that a goaltender has scored. See the goal on the KBear 102.3 Facebook Page. Those teams play again tonight in Houghton. Faceoff is at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will entertain Purdue Northwest today. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men tip off at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams welcome Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines scored four unanswered goals in the third period to earn a 7-4 victory over the Mosinee Papermakers last night. The Wolverines took an early lead with goals by Logan Rastello, Ed Beiring and Josh Harju. The Papermakers then scored four straight before Harju, Jake Anderson, Izaak Avery and Matt Yeo put the game away. Ian Carroll made 36 saves. The Wolverines skate at De Pere tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers are off this weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons suffered their third straight loss last night, 117-111 to the Philadelphia 76ers. Blake Griffin scored 36 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds. The Pistons host the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow afternoon.

The groin injury that forced Detroit guard Ish Smith out of Wednesday’s game will keep him on the bench for at least two weeks.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings welcome the New York Islanders tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Atlanta Falcons in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions visit the Arizona Cardinals in a 4:25 contest. Hear that game on 99.3 The Lift.

Rally
The Lake Superior Performance Rally will be part of a different series next fall. After a number of years as part of the Rally America series, the LSPR will join the American Rally Association schedule in 2019. The Rally will be held October 18th and 19th, and will be the final event in the ARA national championship series.
