Kings Blast ‘Dogs in Copper Island Classic Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night, Calumet ripped Hancock 8-1 in the opening game of the Copper Island Classic. Scott Loukus, Brent Loukus and Gabe Coppo each scored twice for the Copper Kings. Dean Loukus and Rylan Anderson each added a goal, and Sam Erkkila had three assists. Alex Studebaker had 14 saves. The two-game total-goals series will wrap up tonight at the Colosseum. Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team’s late comeback fell short, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire last night. The BluGolds led 4-1 after two periods. Cale Markham scored early in the third, and Russell Daavettila added a late goal to make it close. Andrew Froese scored the Lions’ earlier goal. Marcus Gloss gave up the first two Eau Claire goals in the first stanza. Santeri Seppinen played the final two periods. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The women’s hockey team has the weekend off.

The Lions women’s basketball team will compete at the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic at Wisconsin-LaCrosse, opening against the host team this evening, and facing Wisconsin-Platteville tomorrow.

The men’s basketball team is off this weekend.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team edged the University of Alaska 2-1 last night. Brian Halonen gave the Huskies an early lead, and Tommy Parrottino scored the game-winner on a power play in the second period. Devin Kero made 20 saves, as the Huskies outshot the Nanooks 48-21. Jerseys from last night’s game were auctioned off to raise money for the Portage Health Foundation’s Father’s Day flood relief effort. The family of Thatcher Markham, who was killed in the flood, dropped the opening puck. Devin Kero was Thatcher’s cousin. Those teams play again tonight at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened the Cappo Cup series with a 4-2 loss at 20th-ranked Lake Superior State University last night. Those teams meet in Sault Ste. Marie again this evening.

The MTU men’s basketball team got past Alderson Broaddus University 78-69 in the opening game of the Gary Miller Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania, yesterday. Dawson Bilski scored a career-best 22 points for the Huskies, and Brian Heath added 21. The Huskies will take on the host Gannon University Golden Knights in the championship match tonight.

The MTU women’s team competes at the University of Southern Indiana Thanksgiving Classic in Evansville this weekend. The Huskies will open against Bellarmine University this afternoon, and will face the host team tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan University women’s team dropped a 63-61 nailbiter to Concordia-Saint Paul at the Radisson Classic yesterday. The Wildcats face the University of Jamestown this afternoon.

The NMU men’s team is off this weekend.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines will face off in a home and home series this weekend. Tonight’s game starts at 6:00 at Dee Stadium. Tomorrow’s contest begins at 5:00 at the Colosseum.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 3-1 to the Washington Capitals yesterday afternoon. Andreas Athansiou scored Detroit’s only goal. Jonathan Bernier stopped 17 shots, and took the loss in net. The Wings entertain the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons edged the Houston Rockets 116-111 in overtime last night. Blake Griffin scored 28 points. Andre Drummond added 23, and collected 20 rebounds. The Pistons host the Phoenix Suns tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 3:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings in this week’s Sunday night game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
