Under New Management: Hancock Public Library

Hancock residents will once again have library access before the end of this week.  The Hancock Schools Public Library will be reopening under the leadership of the Portage Lake District Library, which gives patrons access to more resources.

“Beginning Thursday November 1st, the Portage Lake District Library will begin overseeing the management of the Hancock School Public Library,” said PLDL Director Dillon Geshel.

Earlier this year, the library’s Board of Trustees and the Hancock Public School Board signed an agreement that gives the responsibility of management and staffing to the neighboring District Library, offering residents longer hours of operation.

Geshel said, “What that means for patrons across the bridge in Hancock is we will have new regular hours that we’re committing to every week. We’ll also have new staff that are starting to work in that building this week.”

As preparations are underway for the reopening of the Hancock facility, the district library itself continues its community outreach programs, that recently earned Geshel the state library association’s Up and Comer Award.

“For me it’s really an honor to receive that award on behalf of the Portage Lake District Library. The most fun part about my job has been finding new non profits or businesses to form partnerships with that lead to new community resources. I see this award as acknowledgement for that hard work and I’m really grateful that I have such an excellent staff that’s willing to run with some crazy ideas,” Geshel said.

The Hancock Public Schools Library will begin its new hours of operation on Thursday at 10 am. That new scheduled keeps the facility open until 7:00 pm on Monday and Tuesday, and will close at 4:00 Wednesday – Friday, remaining closed on weekends.

Geshel said, “I would encourage residents to stop by and meet our new librarians and learn about some of the services that we’re excited to offer.”
