Maasto Hiihto Trails Still Open Despite Storm Damage

Folks enjoying the Maasto Hiihto trails this winter will need to take the paths less traveled.

Many of the trails were damaged by the Father’s Day Flood and remain unusable, according to the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club’s John Diebel, who gave an update to the Hancock City Council at their regular meeting Wednesday.

Due to extensive trail and bridge washouts, the continuous run down Swedetown Creek in the gorge will not be open this season.

Recreationalists will still be able to enjoy the beauty of the gorge by using alternate routes and Diebel said some trails will be groomed for the first time in several years, offering skiers and snowshoers a fresh look.

A map is available from the club showing the best ways to access the gorge and the surrounding trail system.
