Finnu Volleyball Wins Two – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet defeated Houghton 3-1 (25-10, 25-9, 23-25, 25-8). Elli Djerf had an eight-serve run in the second game, and opened the fourth game with six straight. Kenzie Peterson opened the first game with six straight, and Ava Anderson closed out the first game with six straight.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell won a tough 3-2 ( 25-16, 17-25, 25-14, 25-27, and 15-7) victory over Hancock.
– Chassell shut out Ontonagon 3-0.
– Jeffers blanked Watersmeet 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-18). Marissa Nordstrom led the Jets with six kills, Gracia Asiala had five aces and Heidi Hillstrom had 14 assists.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0.

At the WestPAC cross country meet yesterday…
– Houghton and Hancock placed first and second in the girls meet. Calumet finished fifth. For the Gremlins, Anabel Needham finished second, Maria Velat third, and Ingrid Seagren fifth. For the Bulldogs, Jacie Anderson was sixth, Ellie Sturos eighth, Kirsten Dennis ninth, and Kalli Chynoweth 10th.
– Ishpeming won the boys meet, with Houghton second. Joe Wood of the Gremlins took first place, with Branden Peterson fourth, Clayton Bulleit seventh, and Evan Labyak ninth.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team earned a pair of victories yesterday. The Lions defeated Northland College 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23), and North Central University 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-13, 25-18). In the first match, Marina Dalton had 12 kills, and Jesse Diaz had 21 digs. In the second match, Kaisa Holmstrom had 12 kills, and Diaz and Megan Alworden each recorded 13 digs.

Hancock grad Molly Berg has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. This is the third time that Berg has won the award in her career.

MLB
The National League Championship Series is tied at two wins per team, after the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 in 13 innings last night. L-A scored in the first inning. Milwaukee tied it in the fifth on a Domingo Santana RBI double. Cody Bellinger’s single off Junior Guerra in the bottom of the 13th drove home Manny Machado with the winning run. Game five of the series will be played in Los Angeles this afternoon. Wade Miley will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.

Jackie Bradley Jr.’s eighth-inning grand slam powered the Boston Red Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series yesterday. Boston leads that set two games to one. Game four will be played in Houston tonight.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons open the NBA season at home against the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Tampa Bay tomorrow. Because of NFL football, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

Detroit prospect Evgeny Svechnikov has undergone knee surgery, and will miss the entire season. Svechnikov injured his right ACL in the wings’ final preseason game.

Our regular-season high school football coverage wraps up Friday. Calumet hopes to complete an unbeaten season at L’Anse. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
