Big Traverse,
Marvin H. Wood, 101, of Big Traverse, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a resident.
He was born on September 27, 1917, in Orleans, MI, a son of the late John L. and Martha (Adrian) Wood. Marvin was raised in Orleans, MI and Duluth, MN. As a young man, Marvin began working with his grandfather dredging on the Great Lakes.
On July 16, 1938, he was united in marriage to Violet Hiltunen. The couple resided for a short time in Hancock. They then moved to Ionia, MI, where they owned and operated Marvin’s Grill. During World War II he worked for Champion Spark Plug helping modify the spark plugs used in warplanes. In 1949, the couple moved to Wayne, MI and Marvin then started working at E & L Transport where he delivered cars throughout the country. In 1975, the couple moved to Big Traverse Bay where Marvin enjoyed 43 years of retirement. On June 28, 1996, Violet preceded Marvin in death.
Mr. Wood was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing on the Great Lakes and was a jack of all trades being able to fix almost anything.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his son John David Wood, his wife Violet, 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 7 brothers & sisters and 2 daughters-in-law and 1 son-in-law.

Funeral services for Marvin will be held 11 am Monday, October 15, 2018, at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock with Steve Korpela to officiate. Burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday, October 14, 2018, from 4 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Monday from 10 am until time of services at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock.
