VB Wins for Gremlins, Lakes and Jets – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball yesterday…
– Houghton blanked Ishpeming 3-0.
– Hancock lost to Iron Mountain 3-1.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Ontonagon 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, and 25-14).
– Ewen-Trout Creek v Bessemer – not reported.
– Jeffers defeated L’Anse 3-1 (27-25, 25-21, 25-27, 25-23).

In volleyball tonight, Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Tomorrow, Calumet competes at the Duluth Invitational.

In cross country, at the Blue Bolt-Panther Invitational at the Chassell Trails yesterday…
– On the girls side, Houghton and Chassell combined to take nine of the top 10 spots, with the Gremlins claiming the team title. Anabel Needham, Maria Velat and Ingrid Seagram finished first, second and fourth for Houghton. For Chassell, Lela Rautiola and Jenna Pietila placed third and fifth.
– On the boys side, Gogebic won the team title, and Uriah Aili of the Miners finished first individually. Houghton and Chassell tied for second, with Joe Wood of the Gremlins finishing fourth, and Ben Tuomi of the Panthers placing fifth.

In high school football tonight…
– Hancock visits Munising. Our pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3, KBear102.com, and the free KBear Apple and Android apps.
– Houghton travels to Gwinn.
– Calumet entertains Norway. Because of bad weather, the Copper Kings Homecoming parade has been postponed until October 5th.

In football tomorrow…
– L’Anse plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Ontonagon journeys to Brimley.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team hosts Davenport University today at 5:00, and Grand Valley State tomorrow at 2:00.

The MTU soccer team welcomes Ferris State tonight at 7:00. The Huskies will also host a “Kick with Kids” Free Soccer Clinic for young players tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 at Sherman Field.

The MTU football team plays at Grand Valley State tomorrow evening.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia University has introduced a new club hockey team. The former Lions junior varsity squad will now play in Division Two of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, which governs club hockey in the United States. It will be coached by former Finlandia hockey player Colin Longeway.

MLB
Christin Stewart hit his first two major league home runs last night, as the Detroit Tigers outslugged the Kansas City Royals 11-8. His first blast came in the first inning, and was followed by a homer by Nicholas Castellanos. His second blow came in the second inning. Stewart wound with with six RBI. Most of the scoring came in those first two frames, with Detroit plating nine runs, and the Royals scoring five against Matthew Boyd.

The Tigers host the Royals again tonight. Francisco Liriano will start against Ian Kennedy. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit starter Michael Fulmer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery yesterday. The damage was found to be minor, and he’s expected to be ready for spring training.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off. So did the Cubs and the Cardinals, so Milwaukee remains two-and-a-half games behind Chicago in the National League Central Division, and leads Saint Louis by three games for the top wild card playoff berth. The Brewers begin a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Ivan Nova.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings scored twice in the third period, and came from behind to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 in preseason play last night. Thomas Vanek, Andreas Athanasiou, Evgeny Svechnikov and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit. The Wings will host the Boston Bruins in exhibition play tomorrow night. NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Cleveland Brown snapped their 19-game winless streak with a 21-17 victory over the New York Jets.

The Green Bay Packers play at Washington in a 1:00 game Sunday. The Detroit Lions host the New England Patriots in the Sunday night game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
