Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team lost to Lawrence University 2-0 yesterday. Noah Raisanen made 11 saves for the Lions.
The Finlandia women’s soccer squad earned a 2-0 victory at Lakeland University yesterday. Kirsten L’Esperance and Alexia Gonzales scored for the Lions, and Haley Makela earned the shutout in net. The Lions visit Alverno College today.
The Lions volleyball team was swept 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 15-25) by Wheaton College and 3-0 (11-25, 12-25, 13-25) by Anderson University in the final day of the Marissa Strong Invitational in Illinois yesterday.
The Finlandia football team gave up three touchdowns in the first quarter, and lost 34-12 at Eureka College in Illinois yesterday afternoon. The Lion scored in the first quarter on a 46-yard pass play from De’Llontae Johnson to Kenny Kujawa, and in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by D.J. Davis. Both extra point kicks were blocked. Johnson completed seven of 17 passes, threw an interception, and was sacked four times. Former Munising quarterback Alec Blank completed five of 11 passes for 48 yards.
MTU
Davenport University scored the winning touchdown with 10 seconds remaining, and defeated the Michigan Tech football team 23-21 yesterday. The Huskies led 21-10 with less than five minutes remaining, but the Panthers connected in a 68-yard pass play to close the gap. Tech went three-and-out on their next possession, and Davenport drove 77 yards in the final three minutes. The winning touchdown scored on a fourth-down pass from 12 yards out. Will Ark completed 15 of 30 passes for 264 yards, but the Huskies were held to just 28 rushing yards.
The MTU volleyball squad lost 3-1 (16-25, 18-25, 25-16, 24-26) to 11th-ranked Ferris State yesterday. Olivia Ghormley had 18 kills.
The Huskies soccer team will play at Purdue Northwest today.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team dropped a 47-14 decision to 5th-ranked Grand Valley State University yesterday afternoon.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers gave up a ton of runs, and suffered two crucial injuries as they lost to the Cleveland Indians 15-0 yesterday. Starting pitcher Michael Fulmer left the game with a knee injury after giving up home runs to the first two batters he faced. The damage may have occurred after he tried to field an attempted bunt on the first pitch of the game. Cleveland then teed off on relievers Matt Hall, Sandy Baez, and Zac Reininger to complete their scoring by the end of the fourth inning. The victory clinched the Indians’ third-straight American League Central Division title.
The Tigers play in Cleveland again today. Francisco Liriano will start against Shane Bieber. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Outfielder JaCoby Jones also left yesterday’s game with tightness in his shoulder after crashing into the wall while trying to make a catch. He’s considered day-to-day. Fulmer will be evaluated today.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 yesterday. The Crew’s only score came on Christian Yelich’s 30th home run of the season. Zach Davies gave up two runs over five innings, and took the loss.
The Cubs won, so the Brewers rare now two-and-a-half games behind Chicago in the National League Central Division. They’ll host the Pirates again tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Trevor Williams.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings for a 1:00 game today. Aaron Rodgers says he will start for the Packers. The Detroit Lions play at San Francisco in a 4:05 game today. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
