Secretary Of State Mobile Office Arrives Monday At Michigan Tech

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced today that the Mobile Office will visit Upper Peninsula universities next week, offering voter registration and other services to students, faculty, staff and area residents.

The stops are part of the 3,000-mile 2018 Voter Registration Drive, which includes visits to 18 universities and colleges statewide.

“The Mobile Office provides the ideal opportunity for students to register to vote and to ask questions about voting,” Johnson said. “And that’s not all. Visitors are welcome to renew their driver’s license or license plate tabs, change their address and much more. It’s fast and easy, right on campus.”

During this round of stops, the Mobile Office will visit:

  • Michigan Technological University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, at the sidewalk across from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion;
  • Northern Michigan University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in Lot 28 between the Hedgcock and Jamrich buildings;
  • Lake Superior State University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 in the D parking lot.

The visits are part of Johnson’s far-reaching efforts to register voters and educate them about what to expect on Election Day. The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 6 election is Oct. 9.

Johnson said the voter registration drive will supplement other efforts to register new voters, including:

  • A postcard sent to every 18-year-old on their birthday reminding them to register to vote.
  • Voter registration for newly sworn citizens at naturalization ceremonies across the state.
  • A policy in which office customers who come in for personal ID or driver’s licenses are asked if they want to register to vote, provided they are U.S. citizens.

Johnson reminds residents to visit the online Michigan Voter Information Center, a single, comprehensive source designed for voter convenience at www.Michigan.gov/vote. The site contains sample ballots, as well as information on absentee ballots, polling locations, voting systems and candidates. A mobile version is also available.

Residents can also ask questions about the elimination of Driver Responsibility Fees, including those who have associated debt or a related driver’s license suspension.
