Fall tours of the Quincy Smelter are set to begin in September.
As the leaves begin to change, the tour provides an opportunity for enjoying the color in the Portage Lake in the valley of Houghton and Hancock.
The Quincy Smelter Association holds monthly tours showcasing the only intact copper smelter from the American Industrial Revolution from the turn of the 20th Century.
Visitors can see much of the original machinery used to turn ore into copper ingots.
In addition to the original equipment from the smelter’s construction in 1898, tour guides will also point out the major changes in the Great Expansion of 1920.
Tours will be conducted on September 8th from 11am to 3pm and are $5 a person with children under 5 free.
Since much of the tour is spent in the buildings, this is a great event on rainy days.
Directions: Turn right after crossing the bridge on to M-26, go 1/4 mile to the sign on the right.
The smelter is a former industrial site. We recommend wearing closed shoes for your safety.
