Obituary: Gloria A. Karvonen

ATLANTIC MINE

Gloria A. Karvonen, 87, of Atlantic Mine, died Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

She was born November 2, 1930, in Hubbell, Michigan, a daughter of the late Elden and Lanelda (King) Dulong. She attended school in Hancock and Painesdale, and received her GED from Jeffers High School in 1969.

On September 23, 1950, she was married to Raymond Karvonen at the former St. Joseph’s-St. Patrick’s Church in Hancock.

Gloria was a loving wife and mother. She took pride in caring for her home and family. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, playing bingo, working on jigsaw puzzles, feeding the chipmunks and visiting neighbors over a cup of coffee. Gloria loved watching Wheel of Fortune; it was a part of her daily routine. In earlier years, she enjoyed attending the local annual cooking school. One year she was the lucky winner of a new stove.

Gloria is survived by her loving husband, Ray of Atlantic Mine;

children, Gloria (Ernie) Luttinen of Hancock, Wayne Karvonen of Olympia, Washington, Gary Karvonen of Onkalo’s Corner, Darlene (Kim) Van Wert of Aura, Diane Karvonen of South Range, Cindy Hall of Atlantic Mine, Donny Karvonen of Atlantic Mine; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Keith; a grandson, Ernie Luttinen; a granddaughter, Stephanie Karvonen; a daughter-in-law, Yoko Karvonen; a son-in-law, Gene Hall; two sisters; and four brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018, at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, with the Rev. Fr. William Ssozi as celebrant. Visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. Burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.
