In high school football yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell dropped a 54-30 decision to Norway in its season-opener.

Ryan Carpenter was hit hard yesterday, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 6-1. Carpenter didn’t make it through the fifth inning. He was charged with all six Chicago runs. Detroit collected only four hits in the game – one, a solo home run by Mikie Mahtook.
The Tigers host the White Sox again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Michael Kopech. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
After the game, Carpenter was optioned down to Toledo. Daniel Norris will make a rehab start for the Mud Hens today. If it goes well, he could return from the disabled list to fill the empty rotation spot.
The Pittsburgh Pirates scored eight runs in the final three innings, and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 last evening. Jhoulys Chacín gave up just one run over the first six frames. He was charged with two more runs after leaving in the seventh, and took the loss. Christian Yelich homered for the Crew’s only run.
The Brewers host the Pittsburgh Pirates again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Chris Archer.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team split its two matches on the final day of the Alaska-Anchorage Invitational yesterday. The Huskies swept Barton College 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) in the opener. Olivia Ghormley and Anna Joynas each logged 13 kills. In their final match, Tech fell behind host Alaska-Anchorage 2-0 (26-28, 22-25), came back to tie the contest (25-20, 26-24), and dropped the fifth set (15-11) for a 3-2 loss. Ghormley led the Huskies with 30 kills.
