HS Football Season Kicks Off Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB
Matthew Boyd turned in six shutout innings yesterday, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-2. Ronny Rodriguez, Mikie Mahtook and Nicholas Castellanos homered for Detroit.

The Tigers host the White Sox again this evening. Michael Fulmer will return from the disabled list to start against Reynaldo Lopez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

To make room for Fulmer on the roster, reliever Zac Reininger was sent back to Toledo.

Detroit pitcher Artie Lewicki will undergo Tommy John ligament reconstruction surgery in his pitching elbow. It will be the second such procedure for Lewicki. He’ll miss all of next season.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Wade Miley will pitch against Joe Musgrove.

High School
The high school football season opens tonight…
– Calumet plays the Gogebic Miners at the Bessemer field. Our broadcast will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3, KBear102.com, and the free KBear Apple and Android apps.
– Houghton entertains Westwood.
– Hancock plays at L’Anse.
– Ontonagon travels to Rapid River.

Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Norway tomorrow afternoon.

The expanded WestPAC has bestowed official names on its two football divisions. The large school division, with Hancock, Gogebic, Negaunee, Houghton, Calumet, L’Anse, Westwood, and Iron Mountain will be known as the “Copper” Division. The small school division, with Manistique, Gwinn, Ishpeming, West Iron County, Norway, Munising, Bark River-Harris, and Lake Linden-Hubbell will be known as the “Iron” Division.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team begins its season today at the Alaska-Anchorage Invitational. The Huskies will face Alaska this afternoon, and Western New Mexico tonight.

NFL
In week three of the NFL preseason, the Detroit Lions visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight. The Green Bay Packers visit the Raiders in Oakland.
