Rudy moved to Detroit to work for the Ford Motor Company and play for the Holzbaugh Ford V-8’s, the most dominant franchise in the semi-pro Michigan-Ontario Hockey League (1934). He became a key player and leader who helped the team win several league championships along with the United States senior championship (1938). Over an eight-year career with the V-8’s, he was selected to a number of MOHL all-star teams and one season he won the prestigious Abar Trophy as the league’s most popular and respected player. His occupational skills were considered vital to war time production (1943-44). At the age of 37, he was signed to a pro contract with the Detroit Auto Club, a Red Wing farm team in the International Hockey League (1947). Rudy retired in 1972 after 38 years with Ford where he also served in his country’s war effort during World War II. A fine hockey player who truly played for the love of the game.
