The Detroit Tigers scored twice in the first inning, then held on to earn a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs last night. One run came in on an infield groundout by Nicholas Castellanos. The second scored on an RBI single by Victor Martinez. Jordan Zimmermann threw five shutout innings, then gave up a solo home run in the sixth. Drew VerHagen, Joe Jiménez and Shane Greene each turned in a scoreless inning, with Greene striking out Jason Heyward in a 10-pitch at-bat with the tying run on base to close the game.

The Tigers host the Cubs again tonight. Francisco Liriano will start against Jon Lester. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

There was a magical moment at Comerica Park before last night’s game, as the Tigers honored the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. As fans observed a moment of silence, a rainbow appeared over the video scoreboard where Franklin’s picture was displayed.

Former Brewer Scooter Gennett’s homer in the ninth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-7 victory over Milwaukee last evening. The Crew got off to a quick start, scoring four times in the first inning, and once more in the third. Junior Guerra couldn’t hold the lead, though, as Cincy surged ahead with three runs in the third, and four in the fourth. Guerra was hurt by some sloppy defense, and only two of the runs were earned. Milwaukee tied the contest with two in the bottom of the eighth, but reliever Dan Jennings gave up Gennett’s solo shot in the top of the ninth, and the Reds added an insurance score off Corey Knebel.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Robert Stephenson.
