Calumet, Houghton Continue Cross Country Dominance – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Tigers Blanked by Sox; Lead at One Game
Kyle Lobstein did his part, limiting the White Sox to two runs on five hits over seven innings. The Tigers’ hitters couldn’t support him, though, as the Tigers lost to the White Sox 2-0 last night.

Kansas City lost the suspended game they completed against the Indians last night, then won the regularly scheduled contest. That puts Detroit’s lead over the Royals in the American League Central Division at just one game. With six regular season games remaining, any combination of six Detroit wins or Kansas City losses will clinch the title for the Tigers.

The Tigers continue their home set against the White Sox tonight. David Price will start against Scott Carroll. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

Pitcher Anibal Sanchez will return from the disabled list tonight. With no chance to make minor-league rehab starts to get himself back into shape, Sanchez will work out of the bullpen.

The Brewers were off yesterday, and will open a set at Cincinnati tonight. Mike Fiers will pitch against Johnny Cueto.

Pittsburgh won yesterday, and now holds the first wild card playoff position… a half-game ahead of the Giants. Milwaukee is four-and-a-half games behind San Francisco, with six games remaining.

The Detroit Lions have released rookie kicker Nate Freese. Freese missed four of seven field goal attempts in the first three games of the season. Detroit coach Jim Caldwell still thinks Freese will be a good NFL kicker… but not here, not now… CALDWELL. Freese will be replaced by former Eagles’ kicker Alex Henery.

The Lions will finish the season without middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch. Tulloch tore the ACL in his left knee Sunday while celebrating a sack… which might embarrass some players… TULLOCH. The Lions could sign a free agent to help out sometime this week.

Red Wings Open Preseason With Win
The Red Wings opened their NHL exhibition season last night with a 2-1 victory over the Penguins. Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek combined to stop 36 shots. The Wings will skate at Chicago tonight.

Former Michigan Tech goalie Phoenix Copley earned a win in the Capitals’ 1-0 victory over the Sabres Sunday afternoon. Copley said it was exciting to start an NHL contest… COPLEY A. A little nervous? COPLEY B. Copley made six saves in the first period, and was replaced by veteran Braden Holtby.

MTU V’Ball at NMU Tonight
The Michigan Tech volleyball team will play at Northern Michigan University this evening.

Michigan Tech’s Deedra Irwin and Sean Pengelly have been named this week’s GLIAC Cross Country Athletes of the Week. At the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, Irwin finished third, and Pengelly fifth.

Finlandia LionsFinlandia Soccer Falls to UW-Superior
The Finlandia women’s soccer team lost 2-0 at Wisconsin-Superior yesterday. With most of the game played in the Finlandia end of the field, Adrianna Osuna made 14 saves for the Lions. Finlandia managed only one shot against Superior.

Calumet, Houghton Win at Tech Trails
Houghton-Gremlins-LogoCalumet Athletics LogoThe Calumet girls turned in another dominant cross country performance yesterday, easily defeating Houghton to take the victory at the Tech trails. Hancock finished a close third, and Dollar Bay placed fourth. The Houghton boys took an easy win over Calumet. Dollar Bay placed a distant third, followed by Jeffers, Chassell, Republic-Michigamme and Hancock. Individual results were not submitted.

In high school volleyball this evening…
– Calumet plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Hancock travels to West Iron County.
– L’Anse and Dollar Bay play a triangular at Houghton.
– Chassell entertains Ewen-Trout Creek.
