LL-H Athletic Hall of Fame Class Announced

The newest members of the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School Athletic Hall of Fame have been introduced. The induction will take place September 22nd at 9:30 am, before the Lakes’ homecoming football game.

This year’s class includes (as received from the LL-H Athletic Department):

Scott Artley, Athlete 1969-1973
Scott Artley lettered in track for one year, football for three years and basketball for four. During his career in basketball, he scored 1,075 points and is third on the Lake Linden-Hubbell Career Scoring Leader List at a time when there was no three point shot. While participating in basketball at the school, he earned numerous post seasons honors including: 2nd Team All Conference (1972), U.P. Honorable Mention (1972), MVP-Copper Country Conference (1973), Funke Award (1973), All U.P. (1973). He was the 1973 LL-H Outstanding Male Athlete.

After securing a teaching position in Baraga, Scott Artley coached football and basketball for 27 years. In basketball, his teams earned 5 Copper Country Conference titles, 4 district titles, 2 regional finals and 1996-97 Regional Champions.

Walter Barkell: Athlete 1933-1937
Walter Barkell lettered in football and basketball while attending Lake Linden High School (playing on each varsity team for three years) and participated in various baseball leagues in the area. During his senior year, the football and basketball teams he played for went undefeated during the regular seasons and the basketball team was both conference and district champions. After high school, he tried out for the Detroit Tigers, however, while waiting for assignment was told by his father to return to the Upper Peninsula because he would be better off financially. While in Lake Linden, he participated on the Red Devils-Lake Linden’s men’s independent basketball team, which was coached by Lake Linden-Hubbell Athletic Hall of Fame member Harry Trainor. As captain of the Red Devils, he played against the Harlem Globetrotters two of the years they came to Lake Linden.

In 1939, Walter Barkell joined the Michigan State Police and was stationed in Flint. There he pitched on a minor league team. He retired from the State Police Post in 1965.

Aaron Fezzey: Athlete 1993-1997
Aaron Fezzey lettered in football (4 years), basketball (3 years), and track (4 years) while attending Lake Linden-Hubbell High School. His team participated in the State Football Finals during his junior and senior year and he currently holds the school record in the Shot Put at 49 feet, 6 inches. While participating in athletics at the school he earned numerous post season awards in all three sports. This included: Football-Great Western Conference Lineman of the Year (1995, 1996), All UP Class D (1995, 1996), All State (1995, 1996), All UP All Class Team (1996), Basketball-All Conference Honorable Mention (1995), All Conference Second Team (1997), Track-All State in Shot Put (1995, 1996, 1997), UP Champion in Shot Put (1997). He was the 1997 LL-H Outstanding Male Athlete.

Aaron Fezzey graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2001 and is currently an instructional coach and assistant football coach in Superior, Wisconsin. He has also served as offensive coordinator in the Wisconsin High School Football All Star Game.

Richard Fezzey, Athlete (1987-1991)
Richard Fezzey lettered in football (3 years), basketball (3 years) and track (4 years). He was a member of the first Lakes football team to make it to the state finals (1990), In basketball, he scored 938 Career Points (8th in school history) and 39 points in a single game, which was a school record until broken in 2015. While participating in athletics at the school, he earned numerous post season honors including: Football-Great Western Conference (1989,1990), Great Western Conference Lineman of the Year (1990), All U.P. (1989,1990), All U.P., All Class Team (1990), Associated Press and Detroit Free Press All State Teams (1990), Basketball-All Conference Second Team (1991), All Conference First Team (1990). He was the 1991 LL-H Outstanding Male Athlete.

After graduation, Richard Fezzey went on to Michigan Tech, participating in football as a defensive lineman.

Gerald Perreault, Contributor
Gerald Perrreault is the first Hall of Fame inductee selected as a contributor. This is described as an individual who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the athletic program. For many years, he has come to Lake Linden-Hubbell athletic events, both JV and Varsity, and photographed the athletes. At the end of the season, he has given them all of the pictures he has taken. He has not limited this to home games, travelling to away and playoff games also, making sure that he has pictures of everyone. It has been estimated that some athletes receive 300-400 pictures from him over their course of high school athletics. At the end of each season, he also gives each senior an 8×10 picture.

A 1960 graduate of Lake Linden-Hubbell, Gerald Perreault was a long time teacher in the Calumet School District and was very active in local government, serving on the Country Commission and the Road Commission Boards. All four of his children were Lake Linden-Hubbell graduates.

Jackie (Keranen) Monette: 1979-1983
Jackie (Keranen) Monette lettered in basketball and track while attending Lake Linden- Hubbell High School. In basketball, she led the team for 3 years in steals, rebounding and assists and while in track, she placed in all 4 events in 1983, with her team winning the U.P. finals. She also set the school record for the 400 which stood until 2006. While participating in athletics at the school, she earned numerous post season awards including: Basketball-2 nd Team All-Conference (1980), First Team All-Conference (1981,1982), All U.P. (1981,1982), All State Honorable Mention (1982). She was the LL-H Outstanding Female Athlete in 1983.

After high school, Jackie (Keranen) Monette played for Grand Rapids Baptist College and in 1984 was named MVP and was the team leader in steals, rebounds, assists, and scoring.

Wilbur Schenk: Athlete 1929-1933
Wilbur Schenk lettered in football and basketball while attending Lake Linden High School (playing on each varsity team for three years) and was a member of Lake Linden’s 1932 UP State Championship Basketball Team, a team which was also conference, district and regional champions. During his senior year, the basketball team was also conference, district and regional champs.

After high school, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then went to Northern Michigan University where he played football, basketball and track. He was captain of the basketball team during the 1939-40 year. Wilbur Schenk graduated with a degree in physical education in 1940 where he began teaching and coaching in Tustin, MI. When WWII broke out, he joined the Air Force. After the war ended, he taught in Paw Paw where besides teaching, he coached football, basketball, wrestling and track. His track team won the State Class C Championship in 1947. He advanced to principal of the high school in Paw Paw from 1948-1950. In 1950 he moved to Crystal Falls where he was Principal. In 1965 he became Superintendent, retiring in 1980.
