Houghton County To Host Public Meetings About Jail Expansion

With the bond proposal to fund the expansion of the Houghton County Jail on the ballot in November, there will be a series of public information meetings held to explain the project.

The proposal is for $11 million that will be paid with an estimated millage of 0.75 mills over 20 years.  The project would increase the number of cells at the overcrowded jail and make other improvements.

The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd at the CLK School Commons area.  Additional meetings will be held at the Chassell Fire Hall on October 10th at 6:30pm, at 7:00pm at the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School on October 17th, and on October 24th at the Houghton County Circuit Courtroom..

Meetings will also be held in Laird, Stanton, and Adams Township, as well as the City of Hancock, but details still need to be finalized.

A full list of meetings will be announced when it is complete.

Participating in the meetings would be members of the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, the project architect, County Administrator Eric Forsberg, and the county commissioners representing their districts.
