Heritage Day At Hanka Homestead Saturday

All are invited to come out to the Hanka Homestead in Askel this Saturday, August 18, for a full day of fun and learning!

The Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum is hosting their annual Heritage Day on Saturday, August 18, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Featured will be the Kivajat Finnish Children Dancers, Dean Wascher’s Belgian draft horses, Bonnie and Star, and Abbey Palmer, Education Coordinator at MSU UP Research and Extension Center North Farm in Chatham, presenting “The Homesteader’s Garden: Vegetable Varieties and Tools from the 1920’s”.

Old time children’s games will be organized by Beth Heikkinen and Sharon Eklund,  Dave Morehouse will present instrumental and vocal music, Payne Ann Chassen will demonstrate pioneer blacksmithing skills, Marcia Slater will present “Cast Iron Cookery on the Homestead,” and Oscar Heikkinen and George Kauppila will demonstrate the operation of an original “hit and miss” engine.

The concession stand, operated by the Feed Mill Café, will offer Finnish Fish Stew, hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, etc. Admission: $5 for adults, $2 for ages 13-18, 12 and under are free.
