August has officially been declared Breastfeeding Awareness Month in Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder released the proclamation yesterday, saying that Michigan is committed to reducing infant mortality and improving the health of babies and mothers.
There are a couple of related events in the Copper Country over the next several days.
First, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department’s breastfeeding moms support group will meet this morning at 10:00 at the Health Department office in Hancock. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are welcome
Second, the Copper Country Big Latch-On will take place this Saturday. The Latch On is part of an international event. Moms can meet other moms, and join others around the world in an attempt to set a world record for the most mothers breastfeeding at once. Last year, 17,990 children were breastfed at 725 locations in 23 countries. Participants are asked to arrive at the Jutila Center at 10:00. The Latch On itself will start at 10:30. It’s sponsored by Aspirus Keweenaw, U.P. Health System-Portage, and the Health Department. Light refreshments will be provided, along with coloring pages for older children.
