14 Weekends Left To Fix The Roads

Fourteen and counting–that’s the number of weekends remaining until November 1st.

That fact was stated by Houghton City Manager Eric Waara as he discussed the state of road repair at Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting.

Like most areas in the county, the city of Houghton is in a “wait-and-see” mode as the federal government decides on whether to issue a disaster declaration following the Father’s Day Flood.

Waara said the public works department is ready to tackle the road repair but has to hold back because doing so now might jeopardize federal funding.

Also, the city will have to coordinate with other agencies as many of the roads intersect with state trunklines.

With students returning in about six weeks, repaving Agate Street and Sharon Avenue are considered priorities because they will see increased traffic.

The snow usually flies around the first of November and that means the end of road construction season, so the clock is ticking.
