Houghton Beats Calumet in V’Ball – Friday Sports Wrap

Detroit Tigers Circle LogoTigers Open Critical Series Against Royals
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Jason Vargas. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

The Royals also had yesterday off, so Detroit enters the series with a half-game lead in the American League Central Division.

Brewers Fall in 13th
Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoTony Cruz’ single off Jimmy Nelson in the bottom of the 13th inning drove in the winning run, as the Cardinals edged the Brewers 3-2 last night. Milwaukee led 2-0 in the eighth, but Saint Louis rallied after Mark Reynolds made a critical mental error at first base. With one out, and a runner on first, Reynolds fielded A.J. Pierzynski’s grounder. Reynolds through there were two out… and stepped on the bag to retire Pierzynski… instead of throwing to second to begin a double play that would have ended the inning. The Cardinals took advantage of the extra out to score twice, and tie the game.

The Brewers open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Yovani Gallardo will pitch against Jeff Locke.

Sky Sox LogoThe loss leaves Milwaukee six games out of first place in the National League Central Division. Any combination of four Brewers’ wins or Cardinals losses eliminates them from title contention. Pittsburgh won last night, and has a three-and-a-half game advantage in the race for the second wild card playoff position.

The Brewers will have a new Triple-A affiliate next season, Milwaukee signed a contract with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox yesterday. The Brewers’ 10-year relationship with the Nashville Sounds ended Wednesday when Nashville announced it would be partnering with the Athletics.
