Eles, Peterman Earn Canal Run Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

Mike Fiers pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Boston Red Sox 5-0 last night. Alex Wilson and Shane Greene completed the effort. Detroit took the lead when José Iglesias doubled home two runs in the second inning. Iglesias  added a two-run homer as the Tigers scored three more in the sixth.

The Tigers host the Red Sox again this afternoon. With Michael Fulmer on the disabled list, Blaine Hardy will start against Chris Sale. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers broke their seven-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last evening. Chase Anderson labored through a long first inning, giving up two runs, and leaving the bases loaded. He exited after the fourth inning, and three relievers turned in five shutout frames complete the game. Milwaukee got one back in the second inning, then took the lead in the sixth on a Christian Yelich solo home run, and a two-run triple by Keon Broxton.

The Brewers will entertain the Dodgers again this afternoon. Brent Suter will pitch against Alex Wood.

Ryan Braun returned from the disabled list in time to score twice in last night’s game. Catcher Jacob Nottingham was sent back to Colorado Springs to make room.

Canal Run
At the annual Hancock Canal Run yesterday…
– Stephen Eles of Houghton won the half marathon, finishing nearly 10 minutes ahead of Thaddeus Peterson from La Crosse, Wisconsin. Stephanie Peterman from Au Train won the women’s division, with Calumet’s Alea Isaacson placing second.
– Daniel Byrne of Hancock took the title in the 10-mile run, with an 87-second advantage over Robbie Watling from New London, Wisconsin. Kelly Menge of Negaunee win the women’s division.
– Lance Rambo from Marquette win the five-mile run, finishing 33 seconds ahead of Houghton’s Clayten Sayen. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola won the women’s division.
– Ray Sharp of Atlantic Mine placed first in the 10-mile walk. Karen Ham of Hubbell finished second overall, and first in the women’s division.
– Harley Richards from Sullivan, Missouri, finished first in the five-mile walk. Paige Remali from Houghton was the top women’s finisher.
