Hancock May Need $2.5 Million For Emergency Fund Match

Local municipalities are anxiously awaiting President Trump’s decision on whether to declare Houghton County a federal disaster area.

The city of Hancock reported damages of $3.3 million for the Federal Highway Administration and more than $7.5 million for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The city may be required to pay a match of 20 percent for Federal Highway funds and 25 percent for FEMA.

Hancock City Manager Glenn Anderson said the city can ask the state to pay half of the match for FEMA, and in some cases, the state has paid even more.

If not, then Hancock will have to pay the total match of $2.5 million.

Anderson said the city could look into securing financing to come up with the money.
