Auto Pro Earns Fast Pitch Sweep – Thursday Sports Update

MLB
The Tampa Bay Rays scored three times in the seventh inning, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann kept the Tigers in the game through the first six innings, giving up eight hits, but allowing just one run. Tampa chased him in the seventh, after a C.J. Cron homer and a ground rule double by Ji-Man Choi. Detroit’s runs came in the fourth, on a two-run homer by James McCann.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a series at Houston tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Miami Marlins 5-4 in 12 innings last evening. Miami had taken an early lead, scoring three times off Freddy Peralta in the fourth inning. Milwaukee tied the score the eighth inning, Jesús Aguilar stroked his second RBI double of the night. Starlin Castro singled home the winning run off Jorge López in the 12th.

The Brewers open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Wade Miley will return from the disabled list to start against Jameson Taillon.

Aguilar is headed to the All-Star Game. The Milwaukee first baseman won the National League Final Vote, with the second-highest vote total in the history of the competition.

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last night…
– At the Chassell field, Northern Michigan Land Brokers shut down Superior National Bank 6-1. NMLB broke open a tight game with five runs in the sixth inning. Quinn Donnelly had a triple and a single.
– At the Bone Yard in Lake Linden, Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club 12-6. Kirsten Codere and Erin Gast each had two hits for Auto Pro. Delaney Heinonen had three hits for Loading Zone. Rayna Kalcich was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Sarah Audette. Auto Pro then routed Mattile Rock and Dock 21-1. Taylor Shepeard was the winning pitcher. She and Mackenzie Brunet each had three hits.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Anthony Mantha to a two-year contract. Mantha was a restricted free agent. He led the team with 24 goals last season. The deal is said to be worth 6.6-million dollars.

NFL
Former Detroit Lions head coach Darryl Rogers has died. Rogers found initial success in the college ranks – first at San Jose State, then at Michigan State, where he coached two-sport star Kirk Gibson. He moved on to Arizona State, and then coached the Lions from 1985 to 1988. Darryl Rogers was 83.
