Copper Country Strawberry Festival Begins

For the 70th year in a row, the community is coming together to enjoy a special treat that is done best right here.

The Copper Country Strawberry Festival gets underway today as the Chassell Lions Club once again serves up their famous strawberry shortcake.

Made with strawberries grown locally, Lions Club member Barbara Worrall says the crop this year weathered the storm rather well.

“We’ve been in touch with Henry Outinen, who’s been a strawberry grower in Chassell all his life, and he says it’s perfect timing. There wasn’t as much rain at his farm and the berries are fine. The mounds have kept the berries up and they’re ripening and should be just perfect for the festival and there will be a lot of berries,” said Worrall during an interview in June.

The festival will have all of the usual favorites, the crowning of the Strawberry Queen, the dance, market, fish boil, and the strawberry auction.

Worrall said, “I made some strawberry pies that went for $100 and I’m thinking ‘wow!’ and then somebody comes up and says ‘well, next year, will make some more?’ and I’m thinking that’s just as exciting for the bakers as it is for the bidders.”

The festival runs through Saturday and a full schedule can be found at www.CopperCountryStrawberryFestival.com.
