Tigers Lose Heartbreaker
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead against the Twins last night… only to have Minnesota rally for two runs in the bottom of the inning to hand them a 4-3 loss. J.D. Martinez was the hero in the top of the ninth… blasting a two-out, three-run homer to put Detroit up 3-2. Joe Nathan couldn’t complete the game, though… although he was hurt when Ezequiel Carrera tried to make a diving catch of a soft line drive to center field by Kurt Suzuki. The ball got past him… allowing the tying run to score from first, and giving Suzuki a double. Suzuki moved to third on a ground out… and scored when Aaron Hicks just beat shortstop Andrew Romine’s throw to first on a slow infield ground ball.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Minnesota tonight. David Price will start against Kyle Gibson. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

The Royals also lost, so the Tigers continue to lead Kansas City by a game-and-a-half in the American League Central Division.

Brewers Edge Cardinals in Extras
Hector Gomez’ bloop single in the top of the 12th inning drove in Carlos Gomez with the winning run, as the Brewers edged the Cardinals 3-2 last night. Hector had entered the game in the ninth inning as a pinch-runner, and scored the tying run on Matt Clark’s sacrifice fly.

The Brewers continue that series at Saint Louis tonight. Mike Fiers will pitch against Adam Wainwright.

The win moves the Brewers to within four games of the Cardinals in the National League Central Division. Pittsburgh won, so they’re still a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates… who continue to hold the second wild card playoff berth.

Lions Sign Cornerback
With their cornerback corps diluted by injuries, the Detroit Lions signed veteran free agent Danny Gorrer yesterday. Gorrer is a journeyman who has played for the Rams, Ravens, Seahawks and Buccaneers. With Bill Bentley and Nevin Lawson out for the season, Detroit may also promote rookie Mohammed Seisay from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Packers.
