The Detroit Tigers collected only three hits last night in a 3-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Mike Fiers turned in a marvelous start, allowing a run on five hits over seven innings. Alex Wilson gave up the final two runs in the ninth,
The Tigers will try to break their eight-game losing streak against the Athletics this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Sean Manaea. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has fired pitching coach Chris Bosio for what officials describe as insensitive comments. No one’s saying what the comments were, or at whom they were directed. General Manager Al Avila said they violated team policy, and the terms of Bosio’s contract. Bullpen coach Rick Anderson will fill in as pitching coach for the remainder of the season. Anderson was the Twins’ pitching coach from 2002 to 2014. Toledo Mud Hens pitching coach Jeff Pico will be brought up to serve as bullpen coach.
The Kansas City Royals scored five runs in the seventh inning, and held off the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 yesterday afternoon. Brent Suter had pitched six shutout innings, but opened the seventh by giving up a solo home run, and then loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Jeremy Jeffress relieved him, and gave up a run on a force-out. The rest of the damage came off Josh Hader.
The Brewers open a series at Cincinnati tonight. Junior Guerra will start against Anthony DeSclafani.
Twilight League Baseball
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…
– Wolverine-Orbit will face Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Hancock Driving Park
– REL-Mohawk Technologies meets Superior National Bank-Stanton at the Stanton field.
Both games begin at 6:30.
Softball
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last night, Superior National Bank split a pair of games. They fell 7-3 to Auto Pro Glass and Tire in the opener. Auto Pro scored all seven runs in the second inning. Rayna Kalcich was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Sarah Audette, who also hit a triple. Molly Berg singled for SNB’s only hit of the game. SNB then blanked Mattila Rock and Dock 16-0. Larissa Anderson and Lois Knuuttila combined for the shutout.
MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has added an assistant coach. Jason Schmitz has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Mary, which is a Division Two program in North Dakota. He was also their recruiting coordinator.
Meanwhile, the Tech women’s hoops team has released its schedule for the upcoming season. They’ll open November 9th and 10th at a tournament at Ferris State University. Games against Northern Michigan University will take place in Marquette on January 26th, and in Houghton on March 2nd.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons have reportedly signed guard Keenan Evans of Texas Tech to a two-way contract. The deal means Evans can spend up to 45 days with Detroit next season, with the rest of the time spent with the Pistons’ Grand Rapids Drive G-League team. Evans averaged 17 points per game with the Red Raiders last season.
