Tigers Sweep Tribe
Ian Kinsler’s two-run homer in the seventh inning gave Detroit the lead, and the Tigers went on to take a 6-4 victory over the Indians yesterday. J.D. Martinez added a solo homer and an RBI single for Detroit. Justin Verlander was charged with all four Cleveland runs, although two of them scored after he left the game in the sixth inning, and was replace by Blaine Hardy. Joe Nathan gave up a run in the ninth, but recovered to earn his 32nd save.
The Tigers open a series at Minnesota tonight. Max Scherzer will start against Anthony Swarzak. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Tigers have won six of their last seven games. The Royals lost yesterday, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central Division is now a game-and-a-half.
Detroit catcher Alex Avila left yesterday’s game in the eighth inning, after feeling light-headed. Avila missed some games a week ago because of a mild concussion. Team officials say they’ll watch him closely.
Brewers Rout Reds
The Brewers scored five runs in the seventh inning, and pounded the Reds 9-2 yesterday. The big blow was a three-run homer by September call-up Matt Clark – his third home run in five games. Matt Garza gave up a run on four hits over six innings to earn the win.
The Brewers have today off, and open a series to Saint Louis tomorrow night. Wily Peralta will pitch against Lance Lynn.
Saint Louis and Pittsburgh also won, so Milwaukee remains five games behind the Cardinals in the National League Central Division. The Brewers are a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates, who hold the second wild card berth.
Lions Fall to Packers
In the NFL yesterday, the Lions fell to the Panthers 24-7. Detroit couldn’t take advantage of some early scoring opportunities, as rookie kicker Nate Freese missed two field goals. Coach Jim Caldwell says that doesn’t necessarily put Freese’s job in jeopardy. Matt Stafford completed 27 of 48 passes for 281 yards and one touchdown.
Packers Come Back to beat Jets
The Packer spotted the Jets a 21-3 lead, then roared back to take a 31-24 victory. New York scored touchdowns on its first three possessions, before the Green Bay defense found its footing. Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of 42 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Jordy Nelson caught nine of those passes for 209 yards. Mason Crosby kicked two field goals, including a team-record 55-yarder.
The Lions host the Packers Sunday afternoon.
In tonight’s NFL game, the Eagles play at Indianapolis.
MTU Football Rolls Over Malone
The Michigan Tech football team scored 35 points in the first half, and cruised to a 37-6 victory over Malone Saturday. Tyler Scarlett threw four touchdown passes. The Huskies will host Saginaw Valley State for the Homecoming game on Saturday.
The Michigan Tech soccer team used a strong second half to defeat Minnesota-Crookston 2-1 Friday night. The Michigan Tech women’s tennis team earned its first win of the season Friday, defeating Ashland 7-2. The Huskies fell to Walsh 7-2 Saturday morning. The MTU volleyball team won its first two GLIAC matches over the weekend. The Huskies defeated Northwood 3-0 Saturday, after sweeping Lake Superior State 3-0 Friday night.
NMU Football Downs Quincy
The Northern Michigan University football team earned a 31-14 non-conference victory at Quincy Saturday evening. The Wildcats play at Hillsdale Saturday.
Finlandia
The Finlandia volleyball team was swept at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh tournament over the weekend… losing 3-0 to Ripon College, Martin Luther College, Saint Scholastica and Lawrence University.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team gave up six goals in the second period, and lost to Saint Norbert 7-0 yesterday. The men’s team edged Robert Morris-Lake County 3-2 in overtime Saturday. The women’s game scheduled against Morris was canceled.
High School Football
In high school football on Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell took a 20-0 halftime lead, and went on to defeat L’Anse 33-20. Lakes’ quarterback Arthur Lyons ran 39 yards for one touchdown, and completed touchdown passes of 46 yards to Tyler Roose, and 34 yards to Lucas Klein. Brandon Kemppainen rushed for two touchdowns for the Purple Hornets, and completed 53-yard halfback option pass to Michael Anderson for another score. It was the first time since 1955 that the Lakes have defeated the Hornets.
– Ewen-Trout Creek forfeited its game against Bellaire.
– Ontonagon fell to Rapid River 36-22.
Friday night…
– Houghton earned its first win of the season, with a 38-6 triumph over Ironwood.
– Hancock lost to Northland Pines 62-12.
– Calumet fell at Ishpeming 46-20.
– Baraga was shut out at Gogebic 56-0.
In high school cross country, Hancock runs at the Stephenson Invitational today.
In high school volleyball, Lake Linden-Hubbell and Ironwood play a triangular at Dollar Bay today.
