Hundreds Of Homes & Businesses Damaged By Floods

It’s nothing short of a disaster area.

The Copper Country continues to pick up the pieces after heavy rains caused widespread flooding over the weekend.  Between four and seven inches of rain fell in a short amount of time causing flash flooding and mud slides that resulted in hundreds of homes being damaged and roads being washed away.

Houghton County evacuated two apartment complexes and approximately 300 residents from the village of Hubbell.  Shelters were put in place with the American Red Cross assisting, as well as the Salvation Army and other volunteer organizations.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is working with local officials on a response plan, using a plan from a 2016 flood in Gogebic County as a guide.

Officials continue to meet this morning to ensure that there are no unmet needs or resource requests.  State Representative Scott Dianda has been surveying the damage.  Congressman Jack Bergmann is planning on touring the area this afternoon.  Governor Rick Snyder reportedly may visit the area as well to expedite relief funding.
