Summer Reading Program Begins at Portage Library

Opening day activities and registration for the Portage Lake District Library Summer Reading Program begins Saturday, June 16, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Kids are invited to make crafts and participate in activities, and everyone can create their own ice cream sundae in the community room.

This year’s theme of “Libraries Rock” encourages everyone to make music and sing out loud to celebrate just how awesome their library is. Throughout the day, kids can make musical instruments including a rubber band banjo, rhythm maker-shaker, tambourine, maracas, jingle taps, jingle bracelets, paint rocks, take selfies in a music photo booth, and get their faces painted.

The program will continue through Saturday, September 1, and people may register throughout the summer. Participants will receive a reading log, book bag, and bookmark when they register and prizes as they progress through their reading lists. Prizes include a free book that they choose, an ice cream cone from LB’s Chill-n-Grill, an all day pass to Michigan Tech’s Student Development Center, and Market Bucks to spend at the Downtown Houghton Farmer’s Market.

The Summer Reading Program is open to all ages, children through adults, and reading logs may include books, magazines, audio books, reading to young children, and being read to.

The Summer Reading Program includes Storytimes, programs, and events for all ages. Look for programming information in the library, the media, and at www.pldl.org.

Library programs are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.
