Hancock
Jean E. Pernaski, 86, a resident of Hancock, passed away Sunday evening June 10, 2018, at the Winona House of Portage Pointe with her loving family at her side.
Jean was born on January 20, 1932, the daughter of the late Emil and Aliida Niemi of Atlantic Mine. She attended the Houghton Schools and graduated with honors with the class of 1949.
On June 18, 1955, Jean was united in marriage to Fred Pernaski and together they enjoyed 55 years of Marriage.
Jean had worked at the Atlantic Mine Post Office before marriage and later as a bank teller for Superior National Bank and Houghton National Bank.
Jean’s passion in life was taking care of others. Her caring and compassionate ways made her a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She took pride in her home and tending to her beautiful flower gardens.
Surviving are her four children, Joan (Michael) Thornton of Hancock, Carol (Dr. David) Kass of Hancock, Robert (Deb) Pernaski of Marquette and Edward Pernaski of Hancock; grandchildren Dr. Thomas (Cathy) Thornton of Alpena, Ashley (Brendon) Pirlot of Wilson, Dr. Christina (Jason) Harsant of Belleville, Steven (Kathie) Kass of Hancock, Brian Kass of Gladstone, Kelly (Adam) Tall of Negaunee, and Casey (Patrick) Stuart of Lansing; eight great grandchildren; a sister Alice Moore of Dearborn, two brothers Paul and Don Niemi of Florida, a sister-in-law Irene Niemi and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred, her parents, her brothers, Norman, Eino, John and William; her sisters Sylvia Lindquist, Selma Mangan, Ingrid Niemi, Edna Laird, Irene Mayra, Viola Niemi and Ruth Niemi.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Portage Pointe where Jean resided for 18 months. Their excellent and compassionate care given to Jean was sincerely appreciated.
Funeral services for Jean will be held 12 noon on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Visitation will be held 10:00 am until time of services Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock.
