MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ offense continued to struggle last night, as they lost 7-1 to the Boston Red Sox. Blaine Hardy gave up five runs over six innings, and took the loss.

The Tigers conclude that series in Boston tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Jalen Beeks, who will be making his major league debut. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers added some pitching depth by signing a couple of minor league deals. One is with Jacob Turner, who was Detroit’s first-round draft pick in 2009. Turner was traded away in the deal that brought Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to Detroit six years ago. He’s since played for the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox and Nationals, but has not found great success. The Tigers also added left-hander Hunter Cervenka, who spent some time with the Marlins last season.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cleveland Indians 3-1 yesterday afternoon. Starter Chase Anderson labored through four scoreless innings, but Cleveland scored all three runs off him and reliever Jeremy Jeffress in the fifth. The Brewers have today off, and begin a series at Philadelphia tomorrow night. Jhoulys Chacín will start against Vince Velasquez.

The Northern Michigan teams split the annual Border Bash basketball games against the Northern Wisconsin teams yesterday. The U.P. girls earned a 101-87 victory. Natalie Bartle from Negaunee scored 28 points. Milly Allen from Chassell and Kara Pietila from Houghton each scored 12. The U.P. boys lost 104-94. Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jake Witt scored 20, and Devin Schmitz from Dollar Bay won the three-point contest.

NBA
In the NBA Championship Series last night, Golden State defeated Cleveland 110-102. The Warriors lead the series three games to none, and could wrap up their second straight league title tomorrow night in Cleveland.

University of Michigan basketball coach John Beilein will not become the next head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Beilein interviewed for the job recently, but said yesterday that he will stay with the Wolverines. Reports say that the finalists for Detroit’s coaching job are former Raptors head coach Dwane Casey and San Antonio Spurs assistant Ime Udoka.

NHL
The Stanley Cup series could end tonight, as Washington skates at Las Vegas. The Capitals lead the Golden Knights three games to one.

Rice Lake Fishing Derby
The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will be held on Sunday. The derby is a family-oriented event, with fishing, food, fun and games for kids and adults. Registration begins at 7:00 am at the Lake Linden Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association club house on Rice Lake Road. The cost is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors, and $1.00 for children.
