High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Ironwood won the Division Four District 97 tournament at the Boneyard, defeating Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-1 in the title game. The Lakes scored in the first inning, and held the Red Devils off the board until they broke through with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lake Linden-Hubbell had reached the final with a mercy rule-shortened 12-2 win over the Gogebic Miners. Ironwood took an early 5-0 lead over Hancock in their semifinal. The Bulldogs came back to tie the game, but the Red Devils pulled away to a 9-7 victory. Ironwood will face Rudyard in the regional semifinal.
– At the Division Four District 98 tournament in Eben, L’Anse fell to Ishpeming 12-7 in one semifinal game. Baraga edged Gwinn 12-11 in the other semifinal. The Purple Hornets lost to the Hematites 10-0 in a five-inning championship match. Ishpeming will face Rapid River in the regional semifinal.
– At the Division Four District 97 baseball tournament in Wakefield, Ironwood eliminated Jeffers 6-2 in one semifinal. Gogebic defeated L’Anse 17-3 in six innings in the other. The Miners then won the championship match 10-1, and will face the winner of today’s District 100 tournament in the regional semifinal.
The Division Three softball and baseball tournaments will take place today. Calumet is hosting both events.
– In softball, Houghton will play Westwood at 10:00; Calumet will meet Negaunee at noon, and the winners will then play in the title game.
– In baseball, Calumet will face Negaunee at 10:00; Houghton will play Iron Mountain at 12:00; and the title game will follow. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 9:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. We’ll bring you both semifinals, and the championship game if a local team is involved.
The U.P. Track and Field championship meet will be held today at Kingsford.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored four runs in the second inning, and defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 last night. The big blow in the second inning was a two-run triple by JaCoby Jones. Nicholas Castellanos added a seventh-inning home run. Blaine Hardy pitched five scoreless innings, then gave up two runs in the sixth. Four relievers finished the game, including Artie Lewicki, who relieved Johnny Barbato with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and got Devon Travis to hit into an infield groundout, and Shane Greene, who pitvhed the ninth, and earned the save.
The Tigers entertain the Blue Jays again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against J.A. Happ. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost 8-3 to the White Sox in Chicago last night. Starter Chase Anderson gave up three runs in the third inning. He was charged with another as the Sox scored three more in the sixth inning. Ryan Braun homered. The Brewers play at Chicago again today. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against James Shields.
NHL
The Stanley Cup playoff continues tonight in Washington. The Golden Knights and Capitals are tied at one win per team.
NBA
Game two of the NBA Championship Series will be played tomorrow night in Oakland. The Warriors lead the Cavaliers 1-0.
The Detroit Pistons are officially looking for a new general manager. Jeff Bower’s departure had been assumed since the team hired Ed Stefanski to be senior adviser to owner Tom Gores. Bower’s contract expires June 30th. The team continues its search for a a head coach. University of Michigan coach John Beilein is among those who have been interviewed.
