Joan E. McPhillips, age 82, of L’Anse, MI passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Bayside Village, L’Anse, MI. She was born in Ontonagon, MI on June 17, 1935 the daughter of the late Frank and Eleanor (Keranen) Bernatowicz. Joan graduated from L’Anse High School in 1953. She married James “Jim” McPhillips in Detroit on August 24, 1957. Joan had worked as a Pharmacy Tech at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse and was a former Girl Scout leader. Joan had enjoyed golfing and gardening.
Joan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed.
Joan is survived by her loving husband Jim, daughters Allison (Steve) Hein of Laurium, MI, Anne McPhillips (Bill Richards) of East Lansing, Nancy McPhillips (Chuck Prohaska) of Warren, MI and Joan McPhilllips (Rob Boyd) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, grandchildren Dan, Matt (Allie), Mike, Leah (Matt), Annette, Eleanor, Michelle, Ella and Mac, sisters Mary Lou (John) McAnaw of Fairfax, Virginia and Frances McMasters of Ishpeming and L’Anse. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law Mac McMasters.
In a family full of wise, funny, graceful, feisty women, you stood out. You always had a bit of wisdom and a solution for everything. The way you looked at life made it all a bit more understandable, bearable and pleasant. Because of you I know that a good nap will help anything; that being outside will make me feel and act better; a rocking chair is a good place to cry and that smiling, nodding and moving quickly will get me out of most sticky situations. Rest in peace Mom.
Funeral services for Joan will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, MI with Father Corey Litzner officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel. Interment will take place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday at 12:30 pm
