Hancock Softball Wins Tourney Opener – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
Hancock advanced to the semifinals of the Division Four softball tournament with a 14-4 victory over Jeffers yesterday afternoon. The Bulldogs broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth. After being held to no hits and no runs over the first five innings, the Jets plated four runs in the sixth to prevent an early mercy-rule loss. Delaney Heinonen struck out 14 for the Bulldogs. Hancock will meet Ironwood in the first game of the district semifinals on Friday at noon. Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Gogebic in the other semifinal at 2:00. The championship game will follow. We’ll broadcast both semifinal games on KBear 102 and KBear102.com, along with the championship match if a local team is involved.

In a regular-season match-up, Calumet dropped two games to Rapid River, 12-4 and 16-6.

In regular-season baseball yesterday, Houghton lost two games to Negaunee, 4-3 and 10-0.

In high school golf, Hancock, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Jeffers tee off at the Division Two U.P. Finals at the Oak Crest course in Norway today.

MLB
Michael Fulmer struggled, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the California Angels 9-2 last night. Fulmer gave up four runs in the second inning, and another before leaving the game in the fourth. Detroit’s runs came on solo homers by JaCoby Jones and Jeimer Candelario.

The Tigers will host the Angels again tonight. Mike Fiers will start against Shohei Ohtani. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 last evening. The Brewers collected just three hits. Zach Davies gave up five runs over five innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers wrap up that series against the Cardinals this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Alex Reyes.

Milwaukee shortstop Tyler Saladino sprained his ankle while making a play at second base last night. Manager Craig Counsell said he’ll need time on the disabled list.

NHL
The Stanley Cup series continues tonight, as the Capitals face the Golden Knights in Las Vegas. Vegas leads the series 1-0.

NBA
The NBA championship series opens tomorrow night, when Cleveland plays at Golden State.

Fishing
The annual Knights of Columbus Walleye Fishing Tournament will be held Saturday on Portage Lake, Torch Lake, and Lac la Belle.
